Leading Breast Cancer Research

Mr Naren Basu is committed not only to providing outstanding clinical care but also to improving the future treatment of breast cancer through research. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Birmingham and has played a leading role in several national clinical trials that have helped shape modern breast cancer treatment across the UK.
As Principal Investigator, Mr Basu has led the delivery of major multicentre studies, giving patients access to cutting-edge research while contributing to evidence that informs national and international practice.

LORIS Trial

The LORIS (Low Risk DCIS) Trial investigated whether some women diagnosed with low-risk ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) could be safely managed with active monitoring rather than immediate surgery. The study aimed to determine whether carefully selected patients could avoid unnecessary treatment while maintaining excellent long-term outcomes.

SMALL Trial

The SMALL Trial evaluated innovative approaches to breast surgery designed to improve patient care and recovery. The study explored ways to optimise surgical treatment while maintaining excellent cancer outcomes and enhancing patients' quality of life.

POSNOC Trial

The POSNOC Trial is a major UK-led study investigating whether some women with early breast cancer and limited spread to the lymph nodes can safely avoid further axillary surgery or radiotherapy. The goal is to reduce treatment-related side effects, such as lymphoedema, without compromising cancer control.

EndoNET Trial

The EndoNET Trial examines how endocrine (hormone) therapy can be used more effectively in the treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. The study seeks to improve personalised treatment strategies and ensure patients receive therapies best suited to the biology of their cancer.

Looking to the Future

Research continues to be an important part of Mr Basu's practice. He is currently working on the development of a new clinical trial investigating novel therapies for inflammatory breast cancer, one of the rarest and most aggressive forms of breast cancer. The aim is to evaluate emerging treatments that may improve outcomes for patients with this challenging disease and contribute to the next generation of breast cancer care.
