Approximately 5 to 10% of all breast cancers have a heritable component, by which we mean they run in the family.
The most commonly associated gene with breast cancer is the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, which we call the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene.

In 2013 Angelina Jolie shared with the world that she had inherited a copy of the BRCA1 gene from her mother and decided to have risk-reducing surgery.

When we look at the general population 1 in 500 individuals will have a problematic copy of the BRCA1 gene and here at the Priory we have the availability to offer gene testing to appropriate individuals.
If you have noticed any changes to the breast or have any breast cancer concerns, please see a healthcare professional or come and see our multidisciplinary breast team in Birmingham, UK.
